Aadhaar Card Update Correction Process

UIDAI • Aadhaar Update

Aadhaar Card Update Process: Complete Guide to Name, Date of Birth, Address, Gender, Photo and Biometric Updates

Aadhaar has become the most important identity document for every resident of India. Whether you are opening a bank account, claiming a government scheme benefit, buying a SIM card or taking admission in a school or college, Aadhaar is asked for almost everywhere. If your name, date of birth, address or gender is recorded incorrectly, many of these tasks can get stuck.

That is why it is important to fix any mistake on time. This page explains, in simple language, how each detail in Aadhaar can be changed, which documents are needed, and how to update your photo and fingerprints.

Three Types of Aadhaar Updates

  • Demographic update: Correcting details such as name, date of birth, gender, address, mobile number or email. This is mainly done at an Aadhaar centre, though some details like address can also be changed online through the UIDAI myAadhaar portal.
  • Biometric update: Recording fresh photo, fingerprints and iris scans. The Aadhaar holder must visit an Aadhaar centre in person, and this cannot be done online.
  • Document update: If your Aadhaar is quite old (around 10 years or more), UIDAI advises submitting fresh proof of identity and address. This can be done on the myAadhaar portal or at an Aadhaar centre.

How Many Times Can Each Detail Be Changed?

Some details in Aadhaar can be changed only a limited number of times. Check all your documents carefully before applying so that your chance is not wasted.

DetailChange limitWhere it can be done
NameMaximum 2 times in a lifetimeAadhaar centre
Date of birth (DOB)Only 1 timeAadhaar centre
GenderOnly 1 timeAadhaar centre
AddressNo limitOnline (myAadhaar) or Aadhaar centre
Mobile number / EmailNo limitAadhaar centre
Photo, fingerprints, irisNo limitAadhaar centre

If the limit for name, date of birth or gender has already been used, the correction may still be possible through UIDAI’s special Exception Handling process via a UIDAI Regional Office. This needs additional documents and a written request.

Documents Required for Name Correction in Aadhaar

To change your name or fix its spelling, you need a photo-based Proof of Identity showing your correct name. Usually any one of the following originals is accepted:

  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving licence
  • Ration card / PDS photo card
  • Photo ID card issued by the Central or State Government or a PSU
  • Bank or post office passbook with photo
  • Photo ID card issued by a recognised educational institution
  • Photo identity certificate issued by a gazetted officer or Tehsildar
  • Caste certificate with photo issued by a competent authority

Extra Documents in Special Cases

  • Name change after marriage: Government-issued marriage certificate.
  • Complete change of name: Gazette notification or legal proof of the name change, along with an identity document in the old name.
  • After divorce: Divorce decree.
  • In case of adoption: Adoption certificate.

Make sure you have a document that proves the link between your old and new name, and that the spelling of your name is consistent across all documents.

Documents Required for Date of Birth (DOB) Correction

To change your date of birth, you need the original of a valid Proof of Date of Birth. Any one of these can be used:

  • Birth certificate (issued by the municipal body, panchayat or registrar)
  • Class 10 marksheet or certificate
  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • School Leaving Certificate (SLC) or Transfer Certificate (TC) showing name and date of birth
  • Certified extract of school records issued by the school head
  • Government photo ID card, pension card or EPFO identity proof showing date of birth
  • Date of birth can be changed in Aadhaar only once, so apply only with the correct date and the right document.
  • If a birth certificate was used earlier to record the date, you will need a corrected copy of the same document or another valid proof.
  • Under UIDAI’s current system, a date of birth correction has to be done at an Aadhaar centre.
  • If a correction is needed after the limit is over, you usually have to follow the UIDAI Regional Office process with a birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and a self-declaration.

Documents Required for Address Correction

To change your address, you need a Proof of Address that clearly shows your name and new address:

  • Passport
  • Bank statement or passbook (with photo)
  • Post office account statement or passbook
  • Ration card
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving licence
  • Electricity, water, gas or telephone bill (usually not older than 3 months)
  • Property tax receipt
  • Registered rent or lease agreement
  • Insurance policy or another address proof issued by the Government

Process to Correct Gender in Aadhaar

If the gender in your Aadhaar is recorded wrongly, you get the facility to correct it only once. You have to visit an Aadhaar centre, fill in the correction form and show a valid document that carries your correct gender, such as:

  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • Voter ID card
  • Birth certificate
  • Class 10 marksheet or certified school record

If the gender change limit is already used, you need to apply to a UIDAI Regional Office under the special process. For corrections related to the transgender category, please ask at the Aadhaar centre which documents are needed as per current UIDAI rules.

Step-by-Step Demographic Update Process at an Aadhaar Centre

  1. Choose a centre: Find the nearest Aadhaar centre through the UIDAI website or the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal. You can also book an appointment on myAadhaar in advance to save waiting time.
  2. Carry your documents: Take your Aadhaar number, registered mobile and the original documents listed above. Some centres also ask for photocopies, so keep one copy of each.
  3. Fill the form: Fill in the Aadhaar update/correction form at the centre, or simply tell the operator the correct details and they will enter them in the system.
  4. Check the details: The operator will scan your documents and enter the data. Before submitting, read the name, date and address spelling on the screen carefully.
  5. Identity verification: Your fingerprint or iris will be verified to confirm your identity.
  6. Fee and receipt: Pay the prescribed fee and make sure you receive the acknowledgement slip carrying the Update Request Number (URN).
  7. Track the status: Use the URN to check status on the myAadhaar portal. Once the update is complete, you can download the e-Aadhaar. When name, address, date of birth or gender is changed, a new Aadhaar letter is sent to the address recorded in Aadhaar.

How to Update Photo, Fingerprints and Iris (Biometrics)

In a biometric update, your face photo, all ten fingerprints and both iris scans are captured again. It can be done only at an Aadhaar centre with the Aadhaar holder present. Even to change your photo, you must visit a centre.

When Is a Biometric Update Needed?

  • For children: A first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) after the age of 5 and a second one at the age of 15.
  • When Aadhaar authentication keeps failing because fingerprints are worn out or iris is not being read.
  • When your face has changed a lot due to age, injury or illness and the old photo is not recognisable.
  • When your Aadhaar is more than 10 years old, to keep all details fresh.

Biometric Update Process

  1. Find the nearest Aadhaar centre and, if you wish, take an appointment.
  2. Carry your Aadhaar number and registered mobile. For a child, a parent or guardian should accompany them. New documents are usually not needed for a biometric update, but it is still wise to carry a copy of your Aadhaar.
  3. Tell the operator which biometric update you need: photo, fingerprints, iris or all three.
  4. The operator will capture all ten fingerprints, both irises and a live photograph.
  5. Pay the prescribed fee and collect the acknowledgement slip with the URN (no fee applies to the mandatory update for eligible children).
  6. Check the status on myAadhaar using the URN. Once complete, your new photo and biometrics are recorded in your Aadhaar.

Tips for a Good Biometric Capture

  • Keep your hands clean and dry. Oil, henna, ink or wet hands can spoil the fingerprint scan.
  • For the photo, look straight at the camera, keep hair or cloth off your face and maintain a natural expression.
  • Remove your spectacles during the iris scan and keep your eyes open.
  • For children, keep them calm so that a proper photo and fingerprints can be captured.

Important Precautions While Updating Aadhaar

  • Always carry original documents and use only documents accepted by UIDAI.
  • Name, date of birth and gender should be identical across all your documents, otherwise the request can be rejected.
  • Read all details on the screen carefully before submitting, because the limit for name, DOB and gender is restricted.

(Proof of Date of Birth)
