Download the Aadhaar App and Lock/Unlock Biometrics
The Aadhaar app is the official mobile app from UIDAI. It lets you carry your Aadhaar digitally and share your identity without handing over photocopies. Earlier, the mAadhaar app served this purpose, but UIDAI is now moving users to the new "Aadhaar" app, so anyone setting up fresh should install the new one. With the biometric lock feature, you can stop your fingerprint, iris and face data from being misused.
Key Features of the App
- Your Aadhaar stays safely on your phone in digital form, and some features work even without internet.
- You can share only the required details through a QR code, without showing your full Aadhaar number.
- Face authentication and an app PIN add an extra layer of security.
- Fingerprint, iris and face biometrics can be locked or unlocked from the app.
- Multiple Aadhaar profiles linked to the same registered mobile number (such as family members) can be added in one app.
- The app also offers features like Aadhaar usage history (availability depends on the app version).
Steps to Download and Set Up the Aadhaar App
- Open the Google Play Store (Android) or the App Store (iPhone) and search for "Aadhaar". Make sure the developer is UIDAI / Government of India.
- Install the app, open it and allow the required permissions.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and verify it with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Complete face authentication as instructed on the screen.
- Create a secure PIN to keep the app locked.
- Once setup is complete, your Aadhaar profile is added to the app and you can view your Aadhaar and share it through QR.
How to Lock Biometrics
- Open the Aadhaar app and log in with your PIN or face.
- Go to the settings / security section and choose "Biometric Lock".
- Turn the lock ON and confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- When you see the confirmation message that the lock is active, the process is complete.
How to Unlock Biometrics
- Open the same Biometric Lock option in the app.
- Turn the lock OFF / Unlock and confirm with an OTP.
- Complete the task that needs your biometrics (for example, bank or e-KYC verification).
- As soon as you are done, lock your biometrics again to stay protected.
Lock/Unlock Without the App (Website)
- Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and choose "Lock/Unlock Biometrics".
- Enter your Aadhaar number and captcha, then confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- Select lock or unlock and submit.
Important Points
- Download the app only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Never install it from unknown links or APK files.
- Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number must be active for app setup and for lock/unlock. If no number is linked, get it updated at an Aadhaar center first.
- While biometrics are locked, fingerprint, iris or face authentication (such as AePS) will not work. Unlock only when needed and lock again afterwards.
- Never share your OTP or app PIN with anyone.
- The older mAadhaar app also offered features like Virtual ID (VID) and PVC card ordering. Check inside the new app to see which features are available.

ऐप की मुख्य सुविधाएं (Key Features)
- आपका आधार मोबाइल में डिजिटल रूप में सुरक्षित रहता है, और कुछ सुविधाएं बिना इंटरनेट के भी काम करती हैं।
- QR कोड के ज़रिए सिर्फ ज़रूरी जानकारी साझा की जा सकती है, पूरा आधार नंबर दिखाने की ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ती।
- फेस ऑथेंटिकेशन और ऐप पिन से ऐप में अतिरिक्त सुरक्षा मिलती है।
- फिंगरप्रिंट, आईरिस और फेस बायोमेट्रिक को ऐप से लॉक या अनलॉक किया जा सकता है।
- एक ही रजिस्टर्ड मोबाइल नंबर से जुड़ी कई आधार प्रोफाइल (जैसे परिवार के सदस्य) एक ऐप में जोड़ी जा सकती हैं।
- ऐप में आधार के इस्तेमाल की हिस्ट्री जैसी सुविधाएं भी दी जा रही हैं (उपलब्धता ऐप के वर्ज़न पर निर्भर)।
आधार ऐप डाउनलोड और सेटअप करने के स्टेप्स
- अपने फोन में Google Play Store (Android) या App Store (iPhone) खोलें और "Aadhaar" सर्च करें। डेवलपर के रूप में UIDAI / भारत सरकार का नाम ज़रूर जांचें।
- ऐप इंस्टॉल करके खोलें और ज़रूरी अनुमतियां (Permissions) दें।
- अपना 12 अंकों का आधार नंबर डालें और आधार से जुड़े मोबाइल नंबर पर आए OTP से वेरिफाई करें।
- स्क्रीन पर बताए अनुसार फेस ऑथेंटिकेशन पूरा करें।
- ऐप को लॉक रखने के लिए अपना एक सुरक्षित पिन बनाएं।
- सेटअप पूरा होने पर आपकी आधार प्रोफाइल ऐप में जुड़ जाएगी और आप अपना आधार देख व QR से शेयर कर सकेंगे।
बायोमेट्रिक लॉक करने का तरीका
- आधार ऐप खोलें और पिन या फेस से लॉगिन करें।
- सेटिंग्स / सिक्योरिटी सेक्शन में जाकर "Biometric Lock" (बायोमेट्रिक लॉक) का विकल्प चुनें।
- लॉक को ऑन करें और रजिस्टर्ड मोबाइल पर आए OTP से पुष्टि करें।
- लॉक चालू होने का संदेश दिखने पर प्रक्रिया पूरी हो जाती है।
बायोमेट्रिक अनलॉक करने का तरीका
- ऐप में वही Biometric Lock वाला विकल्प खोलें।
- लॉक को ऑफ / Unlock करें और OTP से पुष्टि करें।
- अपना बायोमेट्रिक वाला काम (जैसे बैंक या e-KYC वेरिफिकेशन) पूरा करें।
- काम पूरा होते ही बायोमेट्रिक को दोबारा लॉक कर दें, ताकि सुरक्षा बनी रहे।
ऐप के बिना वेबसाइट से लॉक/अनलॉक
- myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in खोलें और "Lock/Unlock Biometrics" विकल्प चुनें।
- अपना आधार नंबर और कैप्चा डालें, फिर रजिस्टर्ड मोबाइल पर आए OTP से पुष्टि करें।
- लॉक या अनलॉक का विकल्प चुनकर सबमिट करें।
ज़रूरी बातें
- ऐप केवल Google Play Store या Apple App Store से ही डाउनलोड करें। किसी अनजान लिंक या APK फाइल से इंस्टॉल न करें।
- ऐप सेटअप और लॉक/अनलॉक के लिए आधार से जुड़ा मोबाइल नंबर चालू होना ज़रूरी है। नंबर जुड़ा न हो तो पहले आधार केंद्र पर अपडेट कराएं।
- बायोमेट्रिक लॉक रहने पर फिंगरप्रिंट, आईरिस या फेस से होने वाला ऑथेंटिकेशन (जैसे AePS) नहीं हो पाएगा। ज़रूरत पड़ने पर अनलॉक करें और काम के बाद फिर लॉक कर दें।
- अपना OTP और ऐप पिन किसी के साथ साझा न करें।
- पुराने mAadhaar ऐप में वर्चुअल आईडी (VID) और PVC कार्ड ऑर्डर जैसी सुविधाएं भी थीं। नए ऐप में कौन-सी सुविधा उपलब्ध है, यह ऐप में देख लें।
