Process to Check the Status of a New Aadhaar Card and Aadhaar Update
After you enrol for a new Aadhaar or get your name, address, date of birth, mobile number or biometrics updated, the Aadhaar centre gives you an Acknowledgement Slip. Your request is not completed on the spot. The Aadhaar is generated or updated only after it is checked and processed in the UIDAI system.
The good news is that, with the help of this slip, you can check the status of your new Aadhaar or update from home on the UIDAI online portal. This page explains in simple language how to check the status, what to do if you lose the slip, and what the different statuses mean.
What You Need to Check the Status
- Acknowledgement slip: The slip you received at the Aadhaar centre, which carries your enrolment or update reference number at the top.
- EID (Enrolment ID): The reference number of a new Aadhaar enrolment. It has a 14-digit enrolment number and a 14-digit date-time stamp, making 28 digits in all.
- URN (Update Request Number): A 14-digit number for your update request.
- SRN (Service Request Number): A reference number given for some service requests, used to track that particular request.
- A phone or computer with internet: To open the portal and fill in the captcha.
What Is the Difference Between EID, URN and SRN?
| Number | Length | When you get it |
|---|---|---|
| EID | 28 digits (14-digit enrolment number + 14-digit date-time) | On the slip when you enrol for a new Aadhaar or get an update done at a centre |
| URN | 14 digits | When you submit an update request, online or on the slip |
| SRN | The number given on the slip or message | When you submit certain service requests |
Enter whichever reference number is printed on your slip on the status page. When entering the EID, do not enter only the 14-digit part. You must fill in the complete 28-digit number, including the date and time.
Step-by-Step Process to Check Status Online
- Open the official UIDAI portal myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in in the browser of your phone or computer.
- On the home page, select the “Check Enrolment & Update Status” option.
- Look at your acknowledgement slip and enter the EID, URN or SRN in the correct box.
- Carefully fill in the captcha code shown on the screen.
- Click the Check Status or Submit button.
- The current status of your request will appear on the screen. Take a screenshot or note it down if needed.
What If You Lose the Slip or Forget the EID?
If the slip is lost, there is no need to panic. On the UIDAI portal you can retrieve a lost or forgotten EID or Aadhaar number:
- Open the “Retrieve Lost or Forgotten EID/UID” option on the myAadhaar portal.
- Enter your name and the same mobile number or email that you gave at the time of enrolment or update.
- Fill in the captcha and request an OTP.
- After you enter the OTP, your EID or Aadhaar number will be sent to your registered mobile or email.
- Use the EID you receive to check the status by following the process given above.
This facility works only if the mobile number or email you gave at enrolment is active and with you. If that number is switched off, take help from the nearest Aadhaar centre or the UIDAI helpline 1947.
What the Different Statuses Mean
The wording of statuses on the portal may look slightly different from time to time, but in general they mean the following:
| Status | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Under Process | Your request is being checked and processed in the UIDAI system. | Wait a few days and keep checking the status now and then. |
| Aadhaar Generated / Updated | Your new Aadhaar has been created or your details have been updated. | Download the e-Aadhaar and verify the details. |
| On Hold | For some reason the request has been paused for a while during checking. | Check again after a few days. If it stays the same for long, contact 1947. |
| Rejected | The request was not accepted because of an error or a shortcoming. | Find out the reason and apply again with the correct documents and data. |
How to Download e-Aadhaar Once Your Aadhaar Is Ready
- Select the “Download Aadhaar” option on the myAadhaar portal.
- Enter your Aadhaar number (or EID) and the captcha.
- Verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- A password is needed to open the downloaded PDF. It is made from the first 4 letters of your name (in English capitals) followed by your year of birth (YYYY).
Example: if your name is RAMESH KUMAR and your birth year is 1990, the password will be RAME1990.
If the Status Is Delayed or the Request Is Rejected
- Generally, an Aadhaar can take from a few days to about a month to be generated or updated. If it takes longer, call the UIDAI helpline 1947 (toll-free) and ask with your reference number.
- If a request is rejected, first understand the reason. Common reasons include poor biometric quality, documents that do not match, or mistakes in the details.
- After a rejection you generally have to apply again at an Aadhaar centre with the correct documents. Please ask the centre or UIDAI whether a fee will apply again.
- For the change limit on name, date of birth and gender, generally only successful updates are counted, not rejected requests. Still, confirm this before applying again.
Important Precautions While Checking Status
- Keep the acknowledgement slip safe until the end, because the EID or URN is printed on it.
- Check status only on the official UIDAI website myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Do not enter your details on fake websites or unknown links.
- Never share your OTP or personal Aadhaar details with any person or middleman.
- Enter all 28 digits of the EID (including date and time) carefully and correctly.
- Keep your mobile number linked with Aadhaar so that OTP and online services work smoothly.

- EID (Enrolment ID):
- URN (Update Request Number):
- SRN (Service Request Number):
- Check Status
- myAadhaar पोर्टल पर “Retrieve Lost or Forgotten EID/UID” का विकल्प खोलें।
