• FASTag uses RFID. A reader at the toll plaza reads the tag and deducts the toll from the linked prepaid wallet or account, so you do not stop to pay cash.
• Tolls on national highways and expressways are paid through FASTag, and a vehicle without a valid tag usually pays a higher charge at the plaza.
• Annual Pass: NHAI raised the fee from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 from 1 April 2026. It is valid for one year from activation or 200 trips, whichever comes first, at national highway and expressway plazas only.
• The pass is for private non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans with a valid FASTag. It works on your existing tag, and you can buy it only through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website.
• Use a different tag for each vehicle, and keep only one active FASTag for a vehicle. Older tags of the same vehicle can be blacklisted.

• New vehicles usually come with a FASTag fitted by the dealer

How to Get and Activate a FASTag

1. Choose a bank or app that issues FASTag and open the FASTag application.
2. Enter your vehicle number and upload the documents.
3. Complete KYC with Aadhaar or other ID and pay the issue fee and security deposit, with the first recharge.
4. Collect the tag, or wait for it to be delivered, and paste it inside the windshield behind the rear-view mirror as shown on the tag.
5. Check that the tag shows as active in the bank app, and recharge it above the minimum balance.
6. Recharge by UPI, net banking or card whenever the balance runs low.

Documents Required

• Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle
• Passport-size photograph of the owner
• Owner’s ID proof such as Aadhaar or PAN, and address proof
• Photos of the vehicle, including the number plate, as asked by the issuer
• Driving licence, if the issuer asks for it

How to Buy the Annual Pass

1. Make sure your FASTag is active, fixed on the windshield and linked to the correct vehicle number.
2. Open the Rajmargyatra app, or the NHAI website, and log in.
3. Add your vehicle and select the Annual Pass option priced at Rs 3,075.
4. Pay online by UPI, card or net banking.
5. The pass is usually active on the same FASTag within a couple of hours.
6. After 200 trips or one year the tag goes back to normal FASTag, and you can buy a new pass.

Precautions

• The Annual Pass is not valid at state highway or city toll plazas. Normal FASTag charges apply there.
• Keep the balance above the minimum so that the tag is not blocked at the plaza.
• Do not stick a tag on a glass that has a tint or sunshade that blocks the reader.
• Never share your FASTag OTP or UPI PIN with a caller who offers a "refund" or "KYC update".
