Form 16: What It Is, Part A and Part B, How to Get It, and the New Form 130 from FY 2026-27
Form 16 is the TDS certificate your employer gives you every year. It shows your salary, the deductions allowed and the tax cut and paid to the government. Here is how to read it, how to use it for ITR, and what changes with the new Form 130.
Key Points
- Form 16 is a certificate under the income tax law that proves your employer deducted tax on your salary and deposited it with the government.
- It is issued once a year, usually by 15 June after the financial year ends, for salary of the previous year.
- It has two parts: Part A with the TDS details, and Part B with the salary break-up and the tax calculation.
- You do not need Form 16 to file ITR, but it makes filing easy, and you should match it with Form 26AS and AIS.
- New: under the Income-tax Rules 2026, Form 16 is renumbered as Form 130 from Tax Year 2026-27. Your Form 16 for FY 2025-26 is still called Form 16.
What Part A and Part B Show
| Part | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Part A | Employer’s name, TAN and PAN, your PAN, the period of employment, and quarter-wise TDS deducted and deposited, generated from TRACES |
| Part B | Gross salary, allowances and exemptions, standard deduction, deductions under 80C and others, taxable income, tax payable, rebate and cess |
How to Get Form 16
- Check with your HR or payroll department after the financial year ends.
- Employers download Part A from TRACES and prepare Part B, then sign and issue the certificate.
- You may get it by email, on the HR portal or in print.
- Check that your name, PAN and TAN are correct.
- If you changed jobs during the year, collect Form 16 from every employer.
- If it is late or missing, ask the employer in writing and meanwhile use Form 26AS and your salary slips to file your return.
- Check on screen: menu names, fees and steps on government portals can change. Follow what the official screen shows.
How to Check Your Form 16
- Compare the TDS in Part A with the TDS shown in Form 26AS or AIS. They should match.
- Check that salary in Part B matches your salary slips.
- Check that the deductions you declared, such as 80C or HRA, are shown correctly.
- If the TDS amount does not show in Form 26AS, ask your employer to correct the TDS return.
- Use Form 16 to fill the salary and TDS part of the ITR.
