How to Change or Reset a UAN Password: Complete Process

Your UAN password is the key to the EPFO Member Portal, where you check your PF passbook, update KYC and file claims. If you have forgotten it, or you simply want to change it for safety, you can do it online in a few minutes. This guide covers both cases: resetting the password when you cannot log in, and changing it when you can.

Key Points

  • Your UAN must already be activated. If it is not, activate it first (see our UAN generation guide).
  • Your mobile number linked with the UAN should be working, because the OTP goes to that number.
  • The same password works for the UAN Member Portal and the PF passbook portal.
  • The new password starts working immediately after it is set.
  • If you no longer have the old mobile number, you must first update it through Aadhaar-based verification or your employer.
  • Never share your password or OTP with anyone, including agents.

Method 1: Forgot Password (You Cannot Log In)

  1. Open the EPFO Member Portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface) and click "Forgot Password" below the login box.
  2. Enter your UAN and the captcha, then continue.
  3. Verify your identity as asked: your name, date of birth and gender, and then the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  4. Enter the OTP and, when asked, confirm with your Aadhaar-linked details.
  5. Type your new password twice and submit.
  6. Log in with your UAN and the new password to check that it works.

Method 2: Change Password After Login

  1. Log in to the Member Portal with your UAN, current password and captcha.
  2. Open the "Account" menu (or your profile) and choose "Change Password".
  3. Enter your current password, then the new password, and confirm it.
  4. Submit. Log in again with the new password.

Rules for a Strong Password

  • Use a mix of capital letters, small letters, numbers and a special character (for example Pf@2026x style, but do not copy this one).
  • Keep the length within the limit shown on the portal (usually 8 to 25 characters).
  • Do not use your name, date of birth, mobile number or UAN as the password.
  • Change it every few months and never reuse your bank password.

Common Problems and Solutions

  • OTP not received: Check that your mobile is active and has network. Wait a minute before asking for a new OTP.
  • Old mobile number is lost or changed: Update the number first. You can do this through your employer or an Aadhaar-based update on the portal or UMANG app, then reset the password.
  • "UAN not activated" message: Activate the UAN first through the UMANG app with face authentication.
  • Details do not match: Name, date of birth and gender must match your EPFO record. Ask your employer to correct them if needed.
  • Portal not opening or showing errors: EPFO sometimes carries out maintenance. Try again after a few hours.

Important Points

  • EPFO menu names and screens can change. If an option has moved, look for "Forgot Password" or "Change Password" on the login page or the Account menu.
  • EPFO never asks for your password or OTP on a call or WhatsApp. Report such calls.
  • For help, call the EPFO helpline or raise a complaint on the EPFO grievance portal.

EPFO • UAN
