How to Renew Your Passport: Process, Fees and Documents
On Passport Seva there is no separate “renewal” option. Renewing a passport means applying for Re-issue of Passport, and the fee is the same as for a fresh passport. You can renew when the passport is expiring, expired, or its pages are over, or when you need to change details like name or address. This guide explains the process, fees and documents.
Key Features
- Start 6 to 9 months before expiry. Many countries need at least 6 months of validity for a visa.
- Renewal is filed as Re-issue on the Passport Seva portal. Select the reason: expiry, exhausted pages or change in personal details.
- Police verification is usually not needed for simple renewals. It may be needed if the address has changed or the passport expired more than 3 years ago.
- If visa pages are over, you can take a fresh 60-page booklet on re-issue.
- Tatkal re-issue is available for urgent travel, at the Tatkal fee.
- Renewed adult passports are valid for 10 years.
Step-by-Step Process
- Log in to the Passport Seva portal (passportindia.gov.in). Register first if you are a new user.
- Click Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport and choose Re-issue of Passport.
- Enter the file number and date of birth of your old passport, then select the reason for re-issue.
- Fill in or update your personal and address details. Check every field because it cannot be edited after submission.
- Pay the fee online and book an appointment at the nearest PSK or POPSK.
- Visit on the booked date with original documents, your old passport and the ARN receipt. Biometrics and photo are taken.
- Track the status online. The new passport arrives by Speed Post. Keep the old passport, as it is cancelled and returned or retained as per rules.
Documents Required
For a normal renewal (same name and address)
- Old passport (original) and self-attested copies of the first two pages, last two pages, ECR / Non-ECR page and the observation page if any
- Proof of present address, only if it has changed
- Application receipt (ARN)
If details have changed
- Address change: proof of new address (Aadhaar, utility bill, rent agreement, bank passbook with photo)
- Name change after marriage: marriage certificate or the required annexure for spouse name
- Date of birth correction: birth certificate or school certificate as per the Document Advisor
Special cases
- Passport expired for more than 3 years: police verification and extra documents may be asked
- Short-validity passport: proof that removes the reason for short validity
- Tatkal: eligibility documents and the undertaking required

Renewal is charged as a re-issue, not at the higher lost/damaged rate. Fees as per the revised structure effective 1 July 2026. Fees are non-refundable. Always confirm the exact amount in the Fee Calculator on the Passport Seva portal before paying.
Important Points
- Never choose “Lost/Damaged” for a simple expiry. That fee is much higher. Choose the correct reason.
- Keep the old passport safe until you receive the new one, and carry it to the PSK.
- Photo, signature and details are captured fresh at the centre. Dress simply and avoid heavy jewellery or sunglasses.
- Apply well before travel. Normal processing can take around 30 to 45 days with verification.

मुख्य जानकारी (Key Features)
- एक्सपायरी से 6 से 9 महीने पहले शुरू करें। कई देश वीज़ा के लिए कम से कम 6 महीने की वैधता मांगते हैं।
- रिन्यूअल पासपोर्ट सेवा पोर्टल पर Re-issue के रूप में भरा जाता है। कारण चुनें: एक्सपायरी, पेज भर जाना या निजी जानकारी में बदलाव।
- सामान्य रिन्यूअल में आमतौर पर पुलिस वेरिफिकेशन नहीं होता। पता बदला हो या पासपोर्ट को खत्म हुए 3 साल से ज़्यादा हो गए हों तो हो सकता है।
- वीज़ा पेज भर गए हों तो री-इश्यू में नया 60 पेज का बुकलेट ले सकते हैं।
- जल्दी यात्रा के लिए तत्काल (Tatkal) री-इश्यू उपलब्ध है, तत्काल फीस पर।
- रिन्यू होने पर वयस्कों का पासपोर्ट 10 साल के लिए मान्य होता है।
आवेदन की प्रक्रिया
- पासपोर्ट सेवा पोर्टल (passportindia.gov.in) पर लॉगिन करें। नए यूज़र पहले रजिस्टर करें।
- Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport पर क्लिक करके Re-issue of Passport चुनें।
- अपने पुराने पासपोर्ट का फाइल नंबर और जन्मतिथि डालें, फिर री-इश्यू का कारण चुनें।
- निजी और पते की जानकारी भरें या अपडेट करें। हर फील्ड ध्यान से जांचें क्योंकि सबमिट के बाद बदलाव नहीं होता।

- वर्तमान पते का प्रमाण, केवल तब जब पता बदला हो
- आवेदन रसीद (ARN)
जानकारी बदली हो तो
- पता बदलना: नए पते का प्रमाण (आधार, यूटिलिटी बिल, किराया समझौता, फोटो वाली बैंक पासबुक)
- शादी के बाद नाम बदलना: विवाह प्रमाणपत्र या जीवनसाथी का नाम जोड़ने का ज़रूरी एनेक्सचर
- जन्मतिथि सुधार: Document Advisor के अनुसार जन्म प्रमाणपत्र या स्कूल प्रमाणपत्र
खास स्थितियां
- पासपोर्ट खत्म हुए 3 साल से ज़्यादा: पुलिस वेरिफिकेशन और अतिरिक्त दस्तावेज़ मांगे जा सकते हैं
- शॉर्ट वैलिडिटी पासपोर्ट: कम वैधता का कारण दूर करने वाला प्रमाण
- तत्काल: पात्रता दस्तावेज़ और ज़रूरी घोषणा-पत्र

रिन्यूअल पर री-इश्यू की फीस लगती है, खोए/क्षतिग्रस्त पासपोर्ट वाली ज़्यादा फीस नहीं। फीस 1 जुलाई 2026 से लागू संशोधित ढांचे के अनुसार है। फीस वापस नहीं होती। भुगतान से पहले पासपोर्ट सेवा पोर्टल के फीस कैलकुलेटर में सही राशि ज़रूर जांच लें।
ज़रूरी बातें
- सिर्फ एक्सपायरी के लिए कभी "Lost/Damaged" न चुनें। उसकी फीस काफी ज़्यादा है। सही कारण चुनें।
- नया पासपोर्ट मिलने तक पुराना पासपोर्ट संभालकर रखें और PSK में साथ ले जाएं।
- फोटो, हस्ताक्षर और जानकारी केंद्र पर नए सिरे से ली जाती है। सादे कपड़े पहनें और भारी गहने या धूप का चश्मा न लगाएं।
- यात्रा से काफी पहले आवेदन करें। सामान्य प्रक्रिया में वेरिफिकेशन सहित लगभग 30 से 45 दिन लग सकते हैं।
