How to Transfer Voter ID to a New Address or Constituency Online (Shifting, Form 8)
If you have moved to a new house or a new city, your voter registration should move with you. You do not need to delete your old entry or make a brand-new Voter ID. The Election Commission of India provides the shifting of residence option in Form 8 on the Voters' Services Portal. This guide explains the steps, documents and common mistakes to avoid.
When Should You Transfer Your Voter ID?
Apply for shifting whenever your permanent residence changes, whether you moved within the same constituency or to a different constituency, district or state. You can vote only in the constituency where you are registered, so an updated address matters before every election.
Do not file a new Form 6 or delete your old entry yourself. The shifting option is designed to move the same voter record to the new address.
Documents to Keep Ready
- Your EPIC (Voter ID) number.
- Proof of new address: Aadhaar, bank or post office passbook, electricity, water or gas bill, passport, ration card or a registered rent agreement.
- A clear scan or photo of the document in the format asked.
- An active mobile number or email ID for OTP login.
- Aadhaar number, if you wish to furnish it.
Steps: Transfer Voter ID Online
- Open voters.eci.gov.in or the Voter Helpline App and log in.
- Choose Form 8 and select Shifting of residence.
- Enter your EPIC number so your current details appear.
- Select whether you are shifting within the same assembly constituency or to a different one.
- Enter your new address, with state, district, assembly constituency and pin code.
- Upload the proof of your new address.
- Preview the form, submit, and save the reference number.
- Track the status. A BLO may visit the new address for verification.

After Your Request Is Approved
After the Electoral Registration Officer approves, your name is added to the roll of the new address and removed from the old one. A replacement EPIC may be issued with the new address, and the EPIC number usually remains the same. Return the old card if you are asked to. You can also download the updated e-EPIC.
Important Precautions
- Apply for shifting before the election roll is finalised in your area, so that you can vote in the new place.
- Enter the new address exactly as in your proof document.
- Do not pay agents. ECI does not charge for Form 8.
- Never share your OTP.
- Keep your reference number until the update shows on the portal.

अनुरोध मंजूर होने के बाद
निर्वाचक पंजीकरण अधिकारी की मंजूरी के बाद आपका नाम नए पते की सूची में जुड़ जाता है और पुरानी सूची से हट जाता है। नए पते के साथ रिप्लेसमेंट EPIC जारी हो सकता है, और EPIC नंबर आमतौर पर वही रहता है। मांगा जाए तो पुराना कार्ड लौटा दें। अपडेटेड e-EPIC भी डाउनलोड कर सकते हैं।
