Learner's Licence Validity and Renewal Rules
A learner's licence is valid for six months from the date of issue. You can apply for the permanent driving licence after 30 days and must do it before the learner's licence expires. If the six months pass without a driving test, the licence can no longer be used for that application.
Some states allow online renewal or extension of an expired learner's licence for another six months, while in other places you may have to submit a fresh application and pay the fee again. Check the services list for your state on Sarathi.
Documents to Keep Ready
- Your learner's licence number (even if it has expired) and date of birth.
- Proof of age and address, as asked on the portal.
- Recent passport-size photograph and signature.
- Form 1 (self-declaration of physical fitness), and a medical certificate if required in your case.

Steps: Renew Learner's Licence Online
- Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state.
- Look for Renewal / Extension of Learner Licence in the learner's licence services. If it is not shown, your state may need a fresh application.
- Enter your learner's licence number and date of birth, then verify the details shown.
- Fill in or confirm your personal details and upload the documents asked.
- Pay the prescribed renewal fee online.
- Submit and print the receipt. Book a test or driving test slot if the portal asks you to.
- Track the status using your application number, and download the renewed licence when it is approved.
