Key Points and the 2026 Change

• MGNREGA, the 2005 rural job guarantee law, was repealed on 1 July 2026. It has been replaced by the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025, called VB-G RAM G.
• The guarantee goes up from 100 days to 125 days of wage work a year for every eligible rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.
• The job card is now called the Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Card (GRGC). The Act provides for it to be issued within 15 days of a registration application.
• Your old MGNREGA job card stays valid if your e-KYC is complete, until the new card is issued. Workers must not be refused work only because e-KYC is pending.
• The states pause works for about 60 days around peak sowing and harvest so that farm labour is not short. The 125 days are given during the rest of the year.
• Wages are paid by direct bank transfer, weekly or within 15 days, and a delay entitles you to compensation.

What a Job Card Is Used For

• It is your proof of registration under the scheme and carries your household’s record of work and wages.
• You use it to ask for work from the Gram Panchayat, and the work is recorded against your card.
• Your attendance, days worked and wage payments are tracked against the card, and you can check them on the official portal.
• It helps you claim wage compensation if payment is late, and to complain if work is refused.
• Many people also use it as a local proof of residence, but it is not meant to replace Aadhaar or a ration card.

Who Can Register

• A rural household living in a Gram Panchayat area, where adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work
• Every adult in the household can be listed, and the card is issued per household
• Households do not need to be below the poverty line to register

How to Register and Get the Card

1. Go to your Gram Panchayat office, and meet the Gram Rozgar Sevak or Sarpanch.
2. Fill in the registration application with the names and ages of all adult members and attach a photograph.
3. Submit your Aadhaar and bank or post office account details, and complete e-KYC.
4. The Gram Panchayat verifies the application, and the household is registered.
5. The card is to be issued within 15 days, and you should get a receipt for the application.
6. Check that your name appears in the registered list on the official portal, and keep the card safe.

How to Ask for Work

1. Give a written application for work to the Gram Panchayat, stating the dates and the number of people who want work.
2. Take a dated receipt. This is your proof that you asked for work.
3. Work should be given within the time set by the law, and near your village as far as possible.
4. Attend the worksite, and make sure your attendance is marked in the muster roll.
5. Check that wages reach your bank account within the time set, and complain if they do not.
