  3. Keep proofs such as receipts, premium certificates, bank certificates and fee receipts.
  4. Submit the proofs to your employer, or enter the amounts in the deductions section of the ITR.
  5. Check that the total of 80C, 80CCC and 80CCD(1) does not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh.
  6. Keep proofs for at least 6 years in case the department asks.
  • Check on screen: menu names, fees and steps on government portals can change. Follow what the official screen shows.

Other Deductions You Can Add in the Old Regime

  • 80CCD(1B): up to Rs 50,000 extra for your NPS contribution
  • 80D: premium paid for health insurance for yourself, family and parents, with higher limits for senior citizens
  • 24(b): home loan interest, up to Rs 2 lakh for a self-occupied house
  • HRA: exemption on rent paid, if you receive HRA in your salary
  • 80E: interest on an education loan, with no upper limit for 8 years

Precautions

  • Do not invest only for tax saving. Choose products that match your goals, risk and time.
  • Check the lock-in before you invest, so you do not need the money early.
  • Compare your tax in both regimes. The new regime can be cheaper if your deductions are small.
  • Do not claim 80C if you have opted for the new regime. The claim will be disallowed.
