TDS Explained for FY 2026-27: Rates, Limits, Form 15G/15H, How to Claim a Refund and What Changes Under the New Act
TDS means tax deducted at source. The person who pays you cuts a part of the tax before paying and deposits it with the government. Here are the common TDS rates and limits, how to stop unnecessary TDS, and how to get a refund of extra tax.
Key Points
- TDS is deducted by employers, banks, tenants, companies and others when they pay you salary, interest, rent, fees and similar income.
- The amount deducted is credited to your PAN and shows in Form 26AS and AIS. You can claim it as tax already paid in your ITR.
- TDS is not an extra tax. If it is more than your actual tax, you get a refund when you file the return.
- If you do not give your PAN, TDS is generally cut at 20% or a higher rate.
- New: under the Income-tax Act, 2025, TDS provisions have moved to section 393, and the declaration forms for no TDS, Form 15G and 15H, are now covered by Form 121. The rates and limits below are unchanged for FY 2026-27.
Common TDS Limits and Rates for FY 2026-27
| Payment | Limit | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | Basic exemption, as per your slab | As per slab, estimated by the employer |
| Interest from bank, co-operative bank or post office | Rs 50,000 a year (Rs 1 lakh for senior citizens) | 10% |
| Other interest | Rs 10,000 a year | 10% |
| Dividend from a company | Rs 10,000 a year | 10% |
| Rent of land, building or furniture | Rs 50,000 a month | 10% |
| Rent of plant and machinery | Rs 50,000 a month | 2% |
| Professional fees (technical services at 2%) | Above the limit in the law | 10% |
| Any payment when PAN is not given | Any amount | 20% or the higher rate |
- These are the commonly used limits and rates. Some limits changed from 1 April 2025, and other payments like commission and contractor bills have their own rates. Check the official chart for your case.
How to Avoid Unnecessary TDS: Form 15G and 15H
- Form 15G is a declaration by individuals below 60 whose total income is below the taxable limit, asking the bank not to cut TDS on interest.
- Form 15H is the same declaration for senior citizens aged 60 and above.
- Under the new Act the same declaration is made on Form 121.
- Submit it to your bank at the start of the year, for each bank, with your PAN.
- Do not submit it if your total income, including interest from all banks, is above the taxable limit. A false declaration can lead to penalty.
How to Check Your TDS and Claim a Refund
- Download your Form 16, Form 16A, Form 26AS and AIS.
- Check that every TDS is shown against your PAN and the correct deductor.
- Add the TDS amounts in your ITR under the income they relate to.
- If your total TDS is more than your final tax, the extra amount is shown as a refund in the ITR.
- Add your bank account, linked with PAN and Aadhaar, and e-verify the return.
- Track the refund status on the e-filing portal, and it is credited to your bank account.
- Check on screen: menu names, fees and steps on government portals can change. Follow what the official screen shows.
What if TDS Is Wrongly Cut or Not Deposited
- Ask the deductor to give you the TDS certificate and to correct the TDS return if the credit is missing.
- If you believe the rate should be lower, you can ask the department for a lower or nil deduction certificate in advance.
- If TDS was cut but is not in Form 26AS, the credit may not be allowed until it is corrected.
- For a refund that is delayed or a defect in the return, check the e-filing portal for messages and respond.
Precautions
- Give your PAN to every bank, employer and tenant, or you will lose 20% as TDS.
- Do not submit Form 15G or 15H if your income is above the limit.
- Keep TDS certificates until the assessment is closed.
- Never share your OTP with a caller who says he will get your "TDS refund".
