What is CE Marking?

CE marking shows that a product meets the EU's health, safety and environmental requirements, and it is needed to sell covered products in the EU and EEA. It is not issued by an Indian authority and is not a quality rating; the manufacturer declares conformity after completing the required assessment. Meeting Indian standards alone does not prove compliance with EU rules.

Who Needs It?

• Indian manufacturers and exporters of products covered by EU directives or regulations, such as machinery, electrical equipment, toys, medical devices and pressure equipment
• Only listed product categories need CE marking, so we first confirm whether yours does

Self-Declaration or Notified Body

A Notified Body is designated for specific legislation and scope; not every laboratory qualifies.

Documents Required

• Product description, drawings and specifications
• Risk assessment and list of applicable harmonised standards
• Test reports from competent laboratories
• User manual, labelling and safety information
• Technical file, kept for at least 10 years
• Signed EU Declaration of Conformity

Manufacturers outside the EU usually also need an authorised representative in the EU.

CE Marking Process

1. Identify the EU directives and regulations that apply to your product
2. Check the essential requirements and harmonised standards
3. Do the risk assessment and testing
4. Choose the conformity assessment route, and involve a Notified Body if required
5. Compile the technical file
6. Draft and sign the EU Declaration of Conformity
7. Affix the CE mark (with the Notified Body number where applicable)

Time depends on the product and testing; simple products can be quicker.
