What is the ISI Mark?

The ISI Mark is the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It shows that a product conforms to the relevant Indian Standard. BIS certification is voluntary in general, but the Government makes it compulsory for notified products through Quality Control Orders (QCOs). Check the latest BIS list of compulsory products before applying.

Who Needs It?

• Manufacturers of products covered by a QCO – they must hold the BIS license before selling in India
• Manufacturers who want voluntary certification for credibility and tenders

A 2026 transition order allows a different BIS licensing route for some QCO products (such as toys, footwear and certain appliances). Check whether your product qualifies.

Eligibility

• Applicant must be the actual manufacturer with valid registration
• Factory with proper quality-control and testing facilities, open to BIS audit and sampling
• Product must conform to the applicable Indian Standard
• Documented process controls, test records and qualified staff

• Application (Form-V) and legal / address documents
• Self-evaluation report and manufacturing process details
• Factory layout, quality-control and testing details
• Test reports and raw material details
• Authorisation letter, if a representative applies

Certification Process

1. Identify the Indian Standard for your product
2. Apply on the BIS Manak Online portal with documents and fee
3. Submit product samples for lab testing
4. BIS inspects your factory
5. BIS reviews test and inspection reports
6. License is granted and you can print the ISI Mark with your license number
7. BIS surveillance continues; renew the license on time

Fees

There is no single fixed total; it depends on the product, tests and inspection days. The licence is initially granted for 1–2 years and can be renewed.

Penalty & Verification

• Selling a compulsory product without the mark: first offence up to 2 years jail or fine of at least ₹2 lakh, or both
• Repeat offence: fine of at least ₹5 lakh (up to 10 times the goods' value) or jail, or both
• Goods can be seized and non-conforming products recalled
