What is ISO Certification?

ISO certification confirms that your organisation's management system meets the requirements of a chosen ISO standard. ISO itself only writes the standards; the audit is done and the certificate is issued by an independent certification body. The certificate covers a defined scope of your business, not your product directly.

It is voluntary, but many tenders, customers and vendor approvals ask for it.

Documents Required

• Business registration or incorporation certificate
• Legal name, address and details of products / services
• Scope of certification, policies and key process documents
• Records such as training, internal audit, management review, complaints and corrective actions

Certification Process

1. Choose the ISO standard and define the scope
2. Gap analysis of your current processes
3. Set up policies, procedures and records
4. Train staff, then do an internal audit and management review
5. Select a suitable (preferably accredited) certification body
6. Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits
7. Close any nonconformities and receive the certificate

There is no fixed timeline; it depends on standard, business size and readiness.

Government Subsidy

Eligible Micro and Small Enterprises can claim reimbursement of 75% of certification cost, up to ₹75,000, for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or HACCP under the MSME scheme. Conditions change, so check the latest DC-MSME notice. Some states also offer their own incentives.

Validity & Renewal

• Certificate runs on a 3-year cycle
• Surveillance audits are done in year 1 and year 2
• Recertification audit is done before the cycle ends
• Serious non-compliance can lead to suspension or withdrawal

Verify Your Certificate

Check the certificate number, company name, scope and expiry on the website of the issuing certification body. Accredited certificates can also be checked through NABCB records or IAF CertSearch.
