Organic Certification – NPOP & PGS-India

What is Organic Certification?

Organic certification is a process certification confirming that your crop, farm or processing unit follows organic production standards: no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, no GMO seeds, proper storage, processing and packaging, and documented records. In India, selling food as organic requires approved certification and FSSAI-compliant labelling.

Farmers often start with PGS-India and later move to NPOP for exports.

Conversion Period

Land must be managed organically for 2 years for annual crops and 3 years for perennials before full certification
Earlier organic management can sometimes be counted towards this period, as decided by the certification body
Keep organic and conventional plots clearly separate

How to Get Certified

Choose NPOP (export) or PGS-India (domestic)
Apply to an accredited certification body, or join / form a local PGS group
Follow organic practices and maintain records through the conversion period
Inspection of the farm or unit
Get the scope certificate or PGS-India Green / Organic status
Annual inspection and renewal

Labelling & Sale

Organic food sold in India must follow the FSSAI Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017, which require NPOP or PGS certification and the prescribed organic logo, with a limited exemption for small original producers selling directly to consumers.

भारत में बिकने वाले ऑर्गेनिक खाद्य पदार्थों को FSSAI के खाद्य सुरक्षा और मानक (ऑर्गेनिक खाद्य) विनियम, 2017 का पालन करना होता है, जिनमें NPOP या PGS प्रमाणन और निर्धारित ऑर्गेनिक लोगो ज़रूरी है; ग्राहकों को सीधे बेचने वाले छोटे मूल उत्पादकों को सीमित छूट है।
