What is a Sole Proprietorship?

A sole proprietorship is a business owned and run by one person. The owner and the business are the same in law, so the owner is personally responsible for all profits, losses and debts. There is no separate incorporation certificate; the business is established through registrations that suit its activity.

Registration Process

3. Complete Udyam registration.
4. Register for GST, if applicable.
5. Obtain Shop & Establishment licence.
6. Open a current account.
7. Take extra licences (FSSAI, trade licence, IEC) if needed.

Yearly Compliance

• Income tax return (ITR-3, or ITR-4 for presumptive taxation) – income is taxed as the owner's personal income
• Advance tax if yearly tax exceeds ₹10,000
• GST returns, if registered

• Renewal of licences before expiry
