What is a Trade License?

A trade license is a permission issued by your local municipal body to carry on a particular trade or business at a specific location. It confirms that your activity is allowed there under local safety, health and zoning rules. It does not give ownership of the property.

Who Needs It?

• Shops, retailers and service providers (salons, workshops, gyms, coaching centres)
• Restaurants, cafés, bakeries and food stalls (in addition to FSSAI)
• Factories, manufacturing units, warehouses and godowns
• Home-based businesses that involve public visits or machinery
• Professionals working from a commercial space

Basic eligibility: applicant must be 18+, with no criminal record, and the business must be lawful and allowed in that area.

Documents Required

• ID proof (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID or Driving Licence) and PAN
• Address proof of the premises: rent agreement, property tax receipt or utility bill
• Business proof: incorporation papers, partnership deed or proprietorship declaration
• Landlord NOC if rented
• Layout plan, occupancy certificate or other papers if your municipality asks

Some states ask for extra papers, so requirements differ by city.

How to Apply

1. Open your municipal corporation's portal (or visit its office)
2. Register and choose new trade license
3. Fill the form with business, owner and premises details
4. Upload documents and pay the fee
5. Officer verifies the file and may inspect the premises
6. Download or collect the license after approval

Fees, Validity & Renewal

• No fixed national fee; it depends on city, business type and premises size, roughly ₹500 to ₹10,000+
• Validity is usually one financial year (1 April to 31 March)
• Renew every year before expiry; late renewal attracts a late fee

For renewal keep the old license, last year's fee receipt and the latest property tax receipt ready.

Important Rules

• Display the license at your premises
• It is not transferable; a new owner needs a new license
• A change of address or business name is usually treated as a new application, and the old license should be cancelled
• If you close the business, formally cancel the license to avoid pending dues

Penalties

Running without a valid or renewed license can lead to heavy fines, notices and even sealing of your business. Fines are usually far higher than the license fee.
