PF Alert! ECR Deadline of 15 October Extended to 31 October, Employers Who Miss It Face Interest and Damages
EPFO gives 16 days of relief after the wage ceiling rises from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000
A viral video says that if the ECR is not filed by 15 October, a penalty will apply. But the position has changed. Through a circular dated 13 October 2026, EPFO has extended the last date for filing the ECR and paying contributions for the September 2026 wage month from 15 October to 31 October 2026.
Why the date was extended
- The EPF wage ceiling was raised from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month from 17 September 2026.
- Because the change came mid-month, September had to be computed in two parts, forcing changes in pay-bills and contribution calculations.
- EPFO granted relief after representations from employers.
Things to keep in mind
- The relief is only for September 2026. The October 2026 ECR and contributions remain due on the usual date, 15 November.
- This is an extension, not a waiver. Filing and payment by 31 October will count as on time.
- After that, delay can attract interest and damages.
Process for employers
- Split September wages into the periods before and after 17 September and compute contributions accordingly.
- Check that every employee's UAN, Aadhaar seeding and KYC are correct.
- File a single ECR on the EPFO portal with full details for both periods.
- Under the new system the challan is generated only after the ECR is approved. Pay before 31 October.
For employees
In early November, check your PF passbook or the UMANG app to see whether the September contribution has been credited. If not, ask your employer.
