Unknown Callers Will Now Show a Name! From 1 November 2026 Caller Name Appears on 4G and 5G Phones, No App, No Request Needed
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom companies to start the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service from 1 November 2026. After that, incoming calls on 4G and newer networks will show the caller's name along with the number. The aim is to make unknown calls easier to identify and to curb fraud calls.
How the Name Will Appear
| Situation | What shows on the screen |
|---|---|
| Number is saved in your phone | The name from your contact list |
| Number not saved (domestic call) | The name registered with the caller's telecom operator |
| Call from abroad | 'International Call' instead of a name |
| Business/bulk connection | The entity's registered preferred name |
Rules and Exceptions
- Subscribers who have kept Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) active will not have their name displayed.
- Telecom companies must follow a security-first approach. The caller's name must not be retained in the system after the call ends.
- For new bulk subscribers, the preferred name must be recorded in the application and records.
- TRAI agreed in October 2025 to make the service available by default.
Which Networks Get It
At first the service comes on 4G and newer mobile networks. As per the circular, introducing it on 2G, 3G and landline networks will be considered separately. So it is not confirmed that older networks will get it at the same time.
Caution: A Name Does Not Guarantee Trust
- Seeing a name does not make a call completely safe.
- Never share OTP, bank account or card details at an unknown caller's request.
- Do not directly trust calls that claim to be from a bank or government officer and ask for money or information.
- Report suspicious calls via Sanchar Saathi or your telecom operator.
